System Requirements:

  • A receiving radio (or repeater audio) and antenna system.
  • A modified Hamtronics TD-2 tone decoder / controller.
  • A dedicated computer with a modem and attached phone line.
  • Software to produce the desired results.

The radio or audio source may be of any type as long as it can deliver at least 100mv output without too much distortion. It is strongly recommended that the audio source have a method to squelch unwanted signals and noise (more on this later).

The interface consists of a modified TD-2 tone decoder /controller from Hamtronics Inc. They are also a great source for receivers, according to your needs. The modifications are shown elsewhere in this article, however, you may download the modification schematic as an MS Word97 document.

The computer can be of the surplus variety.

  • A 386, or better, processor. A math coprocessor is not required.
  • 640K RAM.
  • CGA or better graphics and monitor. (EGA, VGA, or AGP is OK)
  • A mouse and mouse software driver is highly recommended.
  • Any version of DOS, 3.2 or better. (The software will work in Windows 3.x, 95/98 environment as long as COM and LPT assignments can be maintained as described below).
  • An internal or external modem (300 to 56K baud) configured as COM1, IRQ4 or COM2, IRQ3. (WinModems will not work).
  • A working phone line attached to the modem.
  • A printer port (SPP, EPP or ECP compatible [1994 and later adapters]) set up as LPT1, LPT2, or LPT3.

Software to produce the desired results is available as Shareware from the link below.

PagerGateway_16Bit.zip

There are 2 files in the package. You MUST have both of the following files in order for the software to work. They MUST both be in the SAME directory and that directory MUST be the current path in order for the software to work properly. The program will create at least 3 new files for members, groups, and documentation as it is used. The newly created files are relatively small, this is normal and should not be of any concern. This software is 16 bit Version and must run inside a DOS Virtual Machine in order to work on Windows OS's.
